Introduction
Since the 4th industrial revolution has lately become the important issue, discussions on
the use of big data are flourishing.
There is always a race against time to develop a new type of drug.
If a pharmaceutical company desires to develop a new, innovative drug, a 10 to 15 year
time period and development costs of approximately 1 trillion won should be invested.
However, the development of a new drug only has a success rate of 0.02%. In general,
the new drug development process proceeds through several stages: Look for a new drug
candidate substance and go through phase 1 – 3 clinical tests after preclinical animal tests.
'Big Data” is suggested as an alternative to decrease costs and time for the new drug
development. The probability of failure in clinical tests also decreases, as a patient suitable for
such tests using the genetic big data can be found. Moreover, effects of such relevant new
drug compared to existing drugs can be predicted.
Even our government declared that it would hold the ‘5th meeting of the public-private
consultative group for Bio-health Industry Promotion’ and establish the strategy for use of
big data in health and medical treatment so as to utilize medical big data as the new drug
development. It also planned to support analysis consulting that collects, manages and
operates the data accumulated based on the national health insurance as the big data,
in which nongovernmental industries desire. However, we still have many outstanding issues
such as policy to resolve before using the medial big data.
Through this upcoming 9th Seoul International New Pharmaceuticals Forum, we are going to
examine how global pharmaceutical companies use the medial big data for the new drug
development. Also we will look for ways of using the medical big data offered by
the government and find if there is any problem in terms of policies.

Andy received his Bachelors in Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 2002. He spent the next decade in IT and Management consulting with Accenture working with the R&D organizations of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to optimize their clinical development organizations and technologies. He joined Medidata Solutions in 2011 and has held a variety of roles in the customer and analytics organizations. Andy currently leads Medidata’s Analytics business. In this capacity he is responsible for the development and execution of the organization’s strategy and solutions, managing a portfolio of 8 offerings. His team’s current focus is optimizing the outcomes of clinical trials through predictive modeling techniques based on Medidata’s historical operational and clinical data asset. Recent examples of industry collaborations and project led by Andy’s team include the creation of synthetic control arms for early phase Oncology studies and the use of real world evidence data and historical site and investigator performance data to enhance the study feasibility and site selection processes.
