Intro
Busan Financial News, the only daily economic newspaper in the Southeast region on Busan as a sister
magazine of First-Class financial newspaper is holding "The 5th Busan Global Finance Forum" jointly with
Busan Metropolitan City and BNK Financial Group on September 12 at Kamcomaru Hall in the BIFC.
As the largest port city in South Korea, Busan is the country’s logistics and shipbuilding hub. With its cluster
of core industries, including machinery and automobiles, domestic and international experts have long been
eyeing Busan as a ‘global financial city’ and potential leader of the global financial market The Korean
government has also acknowledging Busan as a financial center along with Seoul (specializing in maritime
finance and derivatives).
The title of the form is "Envisioning the future of ‘Financial City Busan'" Featuring globally eminent
scholars and economic experts from around the world, we will seek solutions through enthusiastic discussions
on how to shape Busan into a hub of global finance.
We hope that you find new challenges and opportunities in ‘The 5th Busan Global Finance Forum’, a joint
event with Busan Financial News, International Financial City Promotion Center of Busan Economic

Bob Webb is the Martin J. Patsel, Jr., Research Professor at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, U.S.A. He is also the Editor of the Journal of Futures Markets—a leading academic journal in finance that focuses on publishing research on derivative securities and markets. His background includes service in business, government and academia. Specifically it includes: trading fixed income securities for the Investment Department of the World Bank (Consultant); trading financial futures and options on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (Member); designing new financial futures and option contracts for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (Senior Financial Economist); analyzing the effects of deregulating the financial services industry, among others, at the Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget (Senior Financial Economist); examining issues related to international futures markets at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Senior Financial Economist). He earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D., degrees in finance from the University of Chicago. He held a joint appointment at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Business School in Seoul, Korea for three years. He has written opinion pieces for The Wall Street Journal, (USA) Investors’ Business Daily, (USA) Nikkei Weekly, (Japan), MK Economic Newspaper (Korea) and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japan). He has published his research in a number of academic journals including the Journal of Econometrics and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and is the author of the books, Trading Catalysts: How Events Move Markets and Create Trading Opportunities, and Macroeconomic Information and Financial Trading and the co-author of the books, Investment Strategy and State and Local Economic Policy, and Shock Markets: Trading Lessons for Volatile Times which was published by the FT (Financial Times) Press in April 2013. Pearson and China Machine Press published the Chinese translation of Shock Markets: Trading Lessons for Volatile Times, in 2015 under the title, The Real Rules of Trading.

Byung Duck Kim is currently a Senior Research Fellow Financial Markets Division at the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF). He assumed this position after serving as Director General for Public Funds at the Ministry of Planning and Budget in 2006. During his four years at the Ministry, he was in charge of the supervision, evaluation, and monitoring of all public funds in Korea, such as the National Pension Fund. Currently, Dr. Kim’s research interests span various financial issues, such as pension funds, asset management, financial institutions, markets, and regulations. In addition to his role at the Ministry of Planning and Budget, Dr. Kim has played an active role in a variety of government committees, including the Committee for Pool of Public Funds, the Committee for Public Funds Evaluation, the Committee for Public Enterprises Evaluation at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Asset Management Committee of the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC), and the Risk Management Committee of the National Pension Fund among several others. Dr. Kim completed his undergraduate studies at Seoul National University and the University of Texas at Austin; and received his MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Bon Sung Gu has been a Senior Research Fellow at the KIF since 2007. His research interests are mostly in financial industry policy issues from managerial, legal and supervisory perspectives. He served as a member of the management advisory board or a member of board of directors in several Korean financial institutions including banking holding company and life insurer. Prior to joining the KIF, he worked for Andersen Consulting in the strategy and financial services areas upon earning his doctorate from the University of York. His publications are mostly related to policy and supervisory issues and managerial strategies in the Korean banking sector.

Dr. Ki Hwan Lee is currently the dean of Graduate School of Maritime Finance and a professor of corporate finance at Department of Shipping Management, Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan, Korea. He is also the director of Global Ship Finance Expert Training Program funded by Ministry of Ocean and Fishery Affairs and Korea Shipowners’ Association. He served as the dean of academic affairs and the dean of College of International Studies at KMOU. Before joining KMOU in 1995, he also worked for Korea Development Institute from 1982 to 1994. He also served as a member of Management Evaluation Committee of public enterprises between 2003 and 2010. In addition, he has served as a member of several committees of Busan Metropolitan City Government since 1996. He was a president of Korea Association of Financial Engineering and has also served as a director or an editor of many finance related academic associations since 1996. He received his Ph.D. from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester in 1993. His recent research areas include shipping finance, IPOs, venture capital and entrepreneurship. In particular, he published many papers on the performance of venture capital-backed IPOs in the journals such as the Korean Management Review, Korea Venture Management Review, Korean Journal of Financial Management. He is recently focusing on ship finance research.

Mr. Ulf Carlsson joined Nasdaq in 1996. He has since 2003 been heading up Nasdaq’s operations in North Asia & Japan, based in Hong Kong. He is the Chairman of Nasdaq Japan Ltd. and MarketWire China Inc., as well as the Director of the Board of Nasdaq Hong Kong Ltd and Nasdaq Singapore Ltd. Previously, from 1996 to 2003, Ulf was the Head of Nasdaq Marketplace Systems Business Unit, responsible for development and support of the marketplace systems globally. PARK Young Ho has almost 30 years of experience in capital market and now heads the Busan International Financial City Promotion Center from February 2017. He is the primary contact for global financial institutions with interests in developing their businesses in Busan Financial Hub. He served as Executive Director of Korea Securities Depository, where he started his career in 1987. Between 2012 and 2016 PARK has been heading the Global Securities and Fund Division and between 2009 and 2012 he led the Strategy and Planning Department of Korea Securities Depository. He has BA in law from KonKuk University and MS in international finance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
