Intro
In Korea, there is a proverb that says, Tigers leave only their skins when they die,
but through his achievements a man’s name lives on’. So what does a company leave
behind when it dies? The answer is 'patent.' It is a famous quotation among
intellectual property experts.
The corporate patent assets determine the rise and fall of a corporation.
Some companies have grown into global players by utilizing intellectual property,
Whereas some companies failed because they didn’t consider it important.
Qualcomm, a venture business, has grown into a core and global company
in the mobile communications industry based on its intellectual property of CDMA.
Even Nokia, which once dominated the global mobile phone market, did not hand over
its key patents when it sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2013.
Nokia still earns more than 1.6 billion euros each year from basic technologies and
Standard Essential Patent (SEP), etc. used in mobile devices.
On the other hand, South Korean computer manufacturers made inroads into the U.S.
and had been on the up and up with the annual sales of more than 1 million units
in the late 1990s. However, Compaq sued for breach of 13 patents,
including PC security and system speed improvement technology, and the manufacturer
which did not hold a patent in the U.S. withdrew from the market.
IP(intellectual property) has become important enough to determine the rise and fall
of a country, going beyond businesses. IP plays a key role in the job creation and
economic growth of a country. IP disputes of major global companies deals a fatal blow to
the country's jobs and economy. Since the advent of New Protectionism, this trend is becoming
more prevalent. IP has been discussed as an important issue of trade friction between countries.
In response, major advanced countries are stepping up an institutional strategy and
more to prevent technology leaks and protect the IP as well as vitalize it.
The Financial News and Korean Intellectual Property Office will hold 'The 9th International
Intellectual Property and Industrial Security Conference' at the Grand Ballroom of
the Westin Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul on June 14, 2019.
