Intro
Singapore, Shenzhen, Hamburg, Amsterdam, New York... these cities have one thing in
common. It is a city with a port and a financial center. As a trading hub for imports and
exports, the port city promotes financial transactions.
Shenzhen, China, has been growing rapidly as a financial center since it was designated
as China's first special economic zone in 1980. Hamburg, Germany, has also emerged as
a financial center by establishing a cluster of innovative industries based on maritime
finance. New York, represented by Wall Street, is positioned as the financial center of the
US and a global financial hub. Amsterdam has become the center of European trade and
finance early enough to create the world's first stock exchange.
Under these circumstances, Busan is at the crossroads of whether to grow or stagnate
as a “global financial center” beyond the gateway of Korea's imports and exports.
This is especially true at a time when COVID-19 has plunged the world into the
dark. As the saying goes, “crisis brings opportunity.” Fortunately, the pandemic is slowly
coming out of the crisis with more people vaccinated. This means that Busan needs to
prepare for the post-COVID-19 era.
In particular, financial innovation is a prerequisite for Busan to become a global financial
center in the post-COVID-19 era. Above all, Busan must take full advantage of the
economic advantage of having the Korea Exchange, one of Asia's key capital markets,
along with its geographical advantage as an international logistics center. In addition,
efforts are needed to create an ecosystem for technology and startup, centered on the
International Financial Center.
Accordingly, the Busan Financial News holds the '8th Busan Global Financial Forum'
under the theme of “Lead Financial Innovation in Post COVID-19 Era” on October 6 to
find ways to transform Busan into a truly global financial center through financial innovation.
