Introduction
It is projected that Korea will become a "super-aged society" by 2025, with the proportion of the population aged 65 and above reaching over 20% of the total population. Given that Korea entered an aging society in 2018, this transition occurred in just seven years. As of July of this year, the population aged 65 and older has reached 10 million. Analysts project that by 2045, Korean society's aging rate will surpass that of Japan.
The transition to a super-aged society is regarded as an indication that our social structure is undergoing a significant transformation beyond mere demographic changes. In particular, there will be a significant increase in demand for medical care, nursing, and caregiving for the elderly. However, a significant challenge lies in the inadequate number of facilities to meet the rapidly increasing demand.
Currently, there are only 40 senior welfare housing facilities (silver towns) nationwide, accommodating 9,006 households. Despite the 6,259 long-term care facilities across the country, over 75% are operated by private entities, and there are significant regional disparities.
The emergence of a super-aged society presents both challenges and opportunities for the insurance industry. While factors such as stagnation in growth and low birth rates pose challenges, there are also opportunities to expand the role of insurance as a social safety net and to explore new business models and markets.
In this context, Financial News, in collaboration with the Korea Insurance Research Institute, will host the 17th Global Insurance Symposium on November 12th at the Conrad Seoul Hotel in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Themed around "the role of insurance in super-aged society," this symposium will provide participants with insights from domestic and international experts on the challenges and strategies for strengthening the role of the insurance industry in a super-aged society. In addition, case studies of how insurance companies in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Singapore are addressing the aging population issue will be presented.
