Introduction
With the advent of the 21st century's global competition for technological supremacy, the world has become
a battlefield for intellectual property. A striking example is the 2011 lawsuit where Apple sued Samsung Electronics
for patent infringement, resulting in a substantial settlement. This shows that companies with an edge
in fundamental technologies use intellectual property rights to hold back the advances of latecomers.
Korea has emerged as one of the world’s top five countries in international patent applications.
However, only a small portion of patents prove to be commercially valuable.
Recently, there has even been talk in some industries that patents are losing relevance.
Ultimately, the key lies in creating a large number of high-value, profit-generating patents — often called premium patents.
To make this possible, we need to build an environment where companies are encouraged and empowered to invest boldly.
If companies incorporate IP into their management strategies, it can ultimately serve as an effective tool
to enhance corporate value.
In fact, nearly 90% of the total value of S&P 500 companies now comes from intangible assets.
In today’s knowledge-based economy, the importance of intangible assets is growing.
Despite this, in Korea, information and data on corporate intangible assets remain fragmented and limited.
By creating a system for disclosing intellectual property (IP) such as patents and brands—key intangible assets—and setting clear standards,
companies can offer shareholders and investors accurate information, ensuring fair and transparent valuations.
This also supports the adoption of IP-centered sustainable business practices.
In this regard, the 15th International Intellectual Property Protection Conference will explore the theme,
‘IP Protection and Business Strategy Based on Premium Patents.’ The goal is to help companies develop valuable patents
and leverage IP disclosure as part of their management strategy. If companies strategically leverage their IP
and provide detailed disclosures that include how IP contributes to revenue generation, it can attract greater investor interest,
leading to an increase in corporate value.
Japan offers a notable example. The Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Corporate Governance Code states that
“boards should effectively oversee the allocation of management resources — including investments in human capital
and intellectual property — while implementing business portfolio strategies”. It also states that “companies should provide clear
and specific information on such investments, ensuring consistency with their overall business strategies and priorities”.
As a result, many Japanese firms now publicly share detailed IP strategies and data.
At the 15th International Intellectual Property Protection Conference on June 24, attendees will hear keynote speeches
from Heath Hoglund, President of VIA Licensing—the world’s largest patent pool management company—and
Professor Sugimitsu from Kanazawa Institute of Technology, who led IP disclosure initiatives in Japan.
The conference will also offer in-depth lectures on strategies for enhancing corporate value through IP,
including ‘the importance of IP finance for leveraging high-value patents.’
